I enjoyed doing this one because I put time and effort.
The Circulatory System
What are the main jobs of the organ system?
The circulatory system’s main jobs are to transport cells, to protect and cool our body. The blood transports nutrients, water, oxygen and hormones and also carries out the carbon dioxide and waste materials. The blood also carries cells that fight infections and protects us. By transporting blood to the body it helps to cool down our organs.
What major organ makes the circulatory system?
The heart is the main organ that makes up the circulatory system. It is a muscle the size of a fist that pumps the blood. We can find it between the lungs and a little to the left. It beats 60 to 100 times per minute and 100 000 times per day.
How does it work?
The heart pumps the blood through the arteries. These arteries divide into small vessels called capillaries and distributes the blood to the body. The blood returns towards the heart through the veins. The left side of the heart pumps the blood to the other parts of the body and the right side to the lungs.
More than 4-5 liters of blood circulates for an adult. The blood contains plasma, red and white blood cells and platelets. The blood is made of half plasma which is a fluid that contains the cells and other materials. The red cells pick up oxygen in the lungs and carry it to all the body. Then it brings the carbon dioxide back to the lungs to be exhaled. The white blood cells attack and destroy the germs. When needed these cells can reproduce faster to help fight our illnesses. The platelets help stop the bleeding by forming a scale. These 3 cells are created by the bone marrow which is a soft tissue in the bone.
Which diseases or illnesses affect this system?
These 3 diseases affect the circulatory system. The arteriosclerosis is a disease in which the fatty materials blocks the arteries. They use a balloon to push the wall of the vessel to improve the flow of blood. Another disease is the stroke. This occurs when the veins are blocked and therefore the blood is unable to get enough oxygen or nutrients to the brain. Some of the causes are: high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes and high cholesterol. Hypertension (high blood pressure) is another disease that affects the circulatory system. It makes the heart work harder and can cause heart attack, strokes and kidney problems.
Ways to promote the health of this organ system?
To maintain a good healthy lifestyle can prevent many diseases or illnesses. You should exercise to get your body strong. Eat healthy to give you energy and keep your organs in good shape. Don’t smoke because it weakens and damages your lungs.
Amazing Facts
-A capillary is just wide enough for cells to pass through single file.
-All the body’s blood vessels measure 60 000 miles (96 500km).
-Anger and fear increase the heart rate by 30 to 40 beats per minutes
-A red blood cell goes 250 000 times around the circulatory system before dying.
